Travelling Alone: The Massive Suitcase Manoeuvre

If you've travelled alone, you know that sometimes you have to get a suitcase down a flight of stairs without help. While on my last trip in Japan, I had to go down many flights of stairs alone with a very heavy suitcase. Here is how I did it.

Step 1: At the top of the stairs, lay your suitcase on its flattest side. Stand directly in front of it, lower on the stairs. This is important so that you can control the suitcase! Lay it with the top towards you and the handle fully pushed in.

Step 2: Use both hands to gradually maneuver it down the stairs like a sled on a hill. If you need to take a break, push the top of the suitcase in a little so it gets stuck on the step in front of it. Important: Never fully let go of the suitcase till you are sure it is stuck! A heavy suitcase falling down stairs can seriously injure others and damage property !

Step 3: When you reach the bottom of the stairs, pull the suitcase up at the top and wheel as usual.

Step 4: Feel glad that you have a #quiet, relatively safe , easy way of getting your heavy suitcase down all kinds of stairs!

If you're worried about damaging the stairs or suitcase, wrap your suitcase in a sheet or blanket first. Put the sheet or blanket over the top of the suitcase before laying it down. At some point I'd like to invent a creative way of getting a suitcase upstairs alone. But so far, I've found it relatively easy to simply drag it up.
