In March 2020, the Light Up Melbourne Festival had to be postponed due to Covid-19 related concerns. But it seems like it was moved to October 29, 5pm according to the event Facebook page. Given that Melbourne still faces intense lockdowns, this date might be best perceived as tentative; or it may be the case that the event will be moved online and shared via livestreaming.
The festival was described on the Facebook page as follows:
In March 2020, Light Up Melbourne Festival at Birrarung Marr – Upper & Lower Terrace will be held in the City of Melbourne. The 4-day Festival will illuminate the north bank of the Yarra River with larger than life custom-built lanterns, market stalls and entertainment.
The Festival will put on display 11 major lantern light installations with a 27m long x 6m high “Eternal Dragon” as the centre piece.
Some other notable displays: • The Majestic Flying Cranes • The Panda Village • The Bamboo Walk • And many more...
You will also be able to enjoy a diverse range of market stalls, with various specialty food and trader stalls for you to experience – including a “Little Sichuan” area where the very best Sichuanese cuisine will be on display.
After a quick bite, you can rest up and enjoy a great variety of cultural performances and entertainment at the main stage or test your skills out and win some prizes at the amusement games. It is an event not to be missed!
Main Features: • FREE event • Family friendly • Artistic lantern lighting display • Food and merchandise stalls • Lion dancing • Amusement games • On-stage entertainment program • Roving Entertainment • Light Sculptures & Projections
Partners: • City of Melbourne • Victoria Multicultural Commission • Sichuan Food Culture Festival
It seems that it would have been a highly enjoyable festival of Asian culture, and it is a shame that it became one of the many events delayed or cancelled by Covid-19. Hopefully Melbourne will achieve a 0 rate of infection well in advance of the date so that people can attend safely.
