In my wanderings online I happened to stumble across a preview informing me that a new movie about Hokusai was released not too long ago. Who is Hokusai? Probably the most famous artist in Japanese history. He created The Great Wave of Kanagawa:
The movie is said to cover his life story, with details relatively unknown. Given that this might be one of the best known images of all time, knowing the story behind it would be a thrill. As it is, the official movie website looks amazing. I've embedded it below so you can see it for yourself.
The costumes themselves don't seem to be perfectly period, but rather slightly romanticised, which suggests that the film will be more expressive than accurate. But then, perhaps that is just how fashion was in the times of Hokusai. One will have to watch the film to find out. As it is, if you would like to know something about Hokusai and his daughter, you can watch the anime "Miss Hokusai" through Google Play, Anime Lab and many other services. The movie isn't terribly long, but it can give you a little taste of the period.
As it is, the trailers look so aesthetic and majestic. I naturally wondered whether the film would get a theatrical release where I am. But having looked, I could see no sign of this. Which suggests I may have to access it some other way. I couldn't find any way to access it online. However, the social media related to the film can be checked for release details.
